WooCommerce Development
WooCommerce gives you a store you actually own, on infrastructure you control, with none of the per-transaction tax a hosted platform charges. That freedom is worth having — but it means the build quality and the maintenance are yours too. That is the part we do properly.

What we do with WooCommerce
Custom stores on WordPress
A storefront designed for your brand rather than a theme with your logo dropped in, built on the same WordPress your marketing team already knows. Products, content and campaigns managed in one place instead of two systems that disagree.
Rescues, takeovers and performance work
Most WooCommerce stores that feel slow are not slow because of WooCommerce. They are carrying a decade of plugins, an unindexed database and a host chosen on price. We audit before we rebuild, because the fix is often smaller than the story suggests.
Integrations that match how you trade
ERP and inventory, Australian freight carriers and rate logic, local payment gateways, subscriptions, B2B pricing and wholesale tiers. GST handled properly, and multi-currency where you sell offshore.
Migrations in and out
Moving to WooCommerce from a hosted platform, or off it to Shopify when that is genuinely the better call. Either way the work that decides the outcome is the same: product and customer data mapping, and preserving URLs so you keep the rankings you already earned.
The proof
Work we have shipped, not a capability deck.
Common questions
WooCommerce or Shopify — which should we choose?
WooCommerce when you want to own the store outright, avoid per-transaction platform fees, run content and commerce from one WordPress install, or need customisation a hosted platform will not allow. Shopify when you would rather not think about hosting, security and updates at all, and the default way of doing things fits how you trade. The honest test is whether you have someone — us or in-house — who will actually maintain it.
Can you fix a slow WooCommerce store?
Usually, yes — and usually without a rebuild. Slow WooCommerce is rarely WooCommerce. It is more often years of accumulated plugins, an unindexed database, uncached queries on category pages, or hosting picked on price. We audit first and give you a written view of what is actually causing it, so you can decide what is worth fixing.
Can you migrate us from WooCommerce to Shopify, or the other way?
Both directions, yes. The parts that decide whether a migration goes well are unglamorous: mapping products, variants, customers and order history accurately, and preserving URLs so you keep the search rankings you already have. We plan those before anything else — a migration that quietly loses your organic traffic is an expensive kind of success.
Does WooCommerce handle GST and Australian shipping?
Yes. GST display and reporting, Australian carriers and live rate calculation, local payment gateways, and multi-currency for selling overseas. Where the rules get genuinely complex — wholesale tiers, B2B pricing, duty-free — that is configuration and custom work rather than something any platform gives you out of the box.
Is WooCommerce secure enough to take payments?
Yes, and card data does not touch your server in a properly built store — payment gateways handle that, which keeps your PCI scope small. The real risk in WooCommerce is the same as in any WordPress site: abandoned plugins and unpatched versions. We keep the plugin count low, patch on a schedule, and put managed hosting and real backups behind it.
Do you work with retailers outside Sydney?
Our head office is in Sydney and we work with clients across Australia — Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and regional NSW included. Delivery has been remote-first for years, so a project runs the same way whether you are ten minutes away or in another state: scheduled calls, a shared board you can see at any time, and one named point of contact. We are happy to meet in person in Sydney.
Engagement models
How we work
Four straightforward ways to engage us. Pick the one that fits, or mix them as your needs change.
Staff Augmentation
Add experienced Shakewell developers, designers or specialists directly to your own team. Engagements typically run three to twelve months, but can be as short or long as you need — you get the skills without the commitment and cost of hiring full-time.
About staff augmentationFixed-Scope Projects
Have a defined outcome in mind? We scope it, price it and deliver it as a project — a clear timeline, agreed milestones and a single point of accountability from kickoff to handover.
Embedded Delivery Teams
For larger or longer-running work, a cross-functional Shakewell team — development, design and delivery management — plugs in as your delivery arm, working to your priorities and your reporting cadence.
Support & Maintenance
Already live? We keep websites, stores and apps secure, updated and performing through ongoing retainers — business-hours support as standard, with 24/7 coverage available for critical issues.
